Mayonnaise Football League Established 1990

1993 SEASON REVIEW

League expansion led to twelve teams for the 1993 campaign, and, for the first time, all eight owners returned from the previous season. The four expansion teams were allowed to have an expansion draft prior to the MFL draft to make up for the two players existing owners were allowed to protect. The four rookie coaches did very well with two winning their respective divisions and the New Yorkers winning the Mayonnaise Bowl (setting an MFL record for victories along the way). Mr. Steve Young (QB, Sf) of the NFL Rejects put on a grand show to end the season, scoring 195 points in the last seven weeks to capture the MVP title. Overall, scoring averages were well below past years, even when accounting for the extra dilution of talent with twelve teams. Tight Ends faired very well, however, as six TEs scored 45 points or more (45 was #2 high prior to this season). Ben Coates (TE, Ne) of the Weagles scored 18 pts in the final week to set the TE MFL record at 51 points for the season. Shannon Sharpe (TE, Den) of the Sixty Niners scored an amazing 75 points but 30 were on the bench. The Commissioner’s Award was added in 1993 to the owner best displaying the integrity and quality of the game (in the Commish’s opinion); the first winner: Mark Williams (Sixty Niners). The NFL experimented with 2 bye weeks for each team, resulting in an eighteen week MFL season.
